Closet Organization and Cleaning Recommendations

Home storage is an essential part of everyday life. Your clothing closet is no different and needs to be managed and maintained so you can best utilize the space you have. Here are some tips to help you organize and clean your closet.

Clean Out Your Closet

To start off your closet organization, take some time to sort through your closet items to get rid of items you no longer want. Look at clothing to see if you have worn it recently, for example in the past year or two. And if you have not worn it recently, donate it to make more space in your closet. It can be common to hold onto all your clothes and end up with a jam-packed closet where you cannot see your clothing well and what you do have is crammed together getting wrinkled.

Sort through your clothing by type as you narrow down your collection. Start with, for example, your shirts and blouses, then look at your coats, then jackets, and last your pants. This will make it easier to go through everything so you are not overwhelmed by evaluating all of your clothing at once. And when you remove everything from your closet, take some time to clean out your closet to wipe down the shelves, walls, and closet rod, then vacuum or sweep out the floor of the closet.

Store Similar Items Together

When you have all your clothing items all together in the same area, it can look overwhelming and messy. Instead, when you are planning out your closet's organization, make some steps to place similar items together. For example, place all your t-shirts together, and all your dresses together. Or keep your swimming and beach clothing together in a plastic bin or a plastic dresser drawer.

It may also be difficult to hang every type of clothing item on the closet hanger, so choose group clothing by whether it needs to be hanged or folded. For example, fold up your jeans and sweatshirts along with your sweaters and stack them on a shelf. These items are also bulkier than a t-shirt, so they will be easier to store stacked upon one another. Additionally, you don't ever want to store knit sweaters on a hanger because the shoulders can become stretched out and even form bulges from the ends of the hangar.

For items, such as dress shirts, skirts, jackets, and coats, hang them on a hanger and keep them on your closet rod with the other items you have space for. You should also hang up items that wrinkle easily, such as dress pants or a silk dress to keep them looking their best.
