Pond In Your Front Yard Not Looking So Great? 3 Ways To Make It Healthy Again

If you have a pond in your front yard that does not look as good as it once did, there are many things you can do to make it look healthy again. Below are three of these things so you can determine if they would be right for you.

Install an Aerating Fountain

An aerating fountain can not only make your pond healthier but it also adds beauty to it. This type of fountain uses a motor that causes the impeller to rotate. As it rotates, the impeller pumps water from the pond and then expels the water up into the air. The water then breaks apart into small droplets. These droplets also gather air as they hit the water's surface. This helps oxygenate the water to make it healthier.

There are different sizes of aerating fountains you can choose from, depending upon how large your pond is. Talk with the salesman about the type of pond you have and they can help you choose the best type of aerating fountain for your needs. Click here for more information.

Maintain the Pond's Bank

You can keep the water in your pond clear by maintaining the bank. Trees work great to do this but if you do not have trees planted, you can plant grass around the pond. This will help prevent erosion so soil does not get into the pond.

If your pond water is already muddy, you may be able to treat it by applying ground limestone, gypsum, cottonseed meal, alum, or hay. If you are not sure where the mud is coming from, contact your local extension service to help you.

If water runs off into your pond when it rains, you can control it with soil grading, by building an embankment, or by installing diversion ditches. A landscape contractor can help you with these things.

Keep the Pond Maintained

You can further help your pond by keeping it maintained. First thing you should do is to clean the pond as much as you can. To do this, use a net like what is used for swimming pools to remove debris from the surface of the pond.  When finished, use the net to remove debris that may have sunk down to the bottom of the pond.

If there is a skimmer installed in your pond, clean the basket regularly. You need to change or clean the filters as well. How often you do this depends on the type of filter you have. Refer to the manufacture's website for this information.

Following these tips should allow you to have a healthy pond that you can swim in or put fish in.
